A New Bitcoin Documentary

Over the last few years, Bitcoin has been home to many documentaries, from famous crimes to Satoshi Nakamoto’s identity and more. In the next few weeks, one more will join their ranks, as Unbanked will premiere on Apple TV, Amazon Prime, and Google TV this Halloween:

Unbanked will be released on the anniversary of Bitcoin’s original white paper, and the documentary covers the first cryptoasset’s impact. Previous films have documented the story of BTC’s origins, but Unbanked is taking a different approach.

Instead, this documentary aims to record how Bitcoin has actually changed users’ lives. It includes on-the-ground footage from four different continents, as well as exclusive interviews from crypto luminaries like Michael Saylor, Jack Dorsey, Erik Voorhees, and more.

A Cultural Moment for Crypto?

Although this Bitcoin documentary hasn’t been publicly released yet, its creators have still been taking it on a screening circuit around the US.

Unbanked has competed in multiple awards shows, already winning Best Documentary at the Manhattan Film Festival and a Spotlight Award at the Harlem International Film Festival. The team also plans to conduct an Oscar campaign, but this is a highly ambitious undertaking.

Still, crypto has been gaining a lot of mainstream acceptance lately thanks to political breakthroughs and TradFi investment. Strictly speaking, now might be the best time for a Bitcoin documentary to aim for real cultural accolades like this.

In any event, Unbanked could be a significant moment for the industry. The most recent major Bitcoin documentary caused a meaningful real-world splash, but this one might be even bigger. For now, though, we’ll just have to wait and see.
